Petition seeking IRD DG’s release in SC full bench

A habeas corpus petition filed by Kalpana Upreti Sharma, wife of Director General of Inland Revenue Department Chudamani Sharma, was heard in a five-member full bench.
The bench comprised Deepak Raj Joshee, Deepak Kumar Karki, Kedar Prasad Chalise, Sharada Prasad Ghimire and Anil Kumar Sinha.
According to Spokesperson for the SC Mahendranath Upadhyay, the bench ordered to procure files of corruption case against IRD DG Sharma at the Special Court. Earlier, the SC had passed an order telling the Special Court to maintain status quo on the graft case against Sharma until a final verdict on the habeas corpus petition.
A division bench of SC had referred the petition to a full bench of the apex court. Sharma, who was arrested on June 2 on charges of revenue embezzlement remains in the custody of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.  The CIAA has also filed a graft case against two other members of the then Tax Settlement Commission Lumbadhwaj Mahat and Umesh Dhakal. They have been accused of embezzling revenue while working as TSC office bearers.
