KATHMANDU, JULY 12

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' is seeking a vote of confidence for his government from the House of Representatives (HoR) today.

PM Dahal decided to seek a vote of confidence following the withdrawal of support by CPN-UML from the coalition government on July 3. Despite this, PM Dahal refused to resign and opted to face the Parliament, exercising his constitutional rights to take a vote of confidence from the HoR.

According to Article 100 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, the Prime Minister must table a motion in the HoR for a vote of confidence within 30 days if a political party in a coalition government withdraws its support.

On July 1, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML agreed to form a new power alliance and establish a new national consensus government, with the two parties taking turns leading the government.

The CPN-UML and Nepali Congress have issued whips to their Members of Parliament to vote against the PM. Similarly, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Janamat Party, Janata Samajwadi Party, Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, and Nagarik Unmukti Party have decided to vote against the PM. Meanwhile, the Rastriya Swatantra Party has instructed its MPs to vote for the PM.

If the PM fails to receive the vote of confidence, President Ram Chandra Paudel will have to call for the formation of a new government.
