KATHMANDU, JULY 7
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli briefed the House of Representatives today on Nepal's participation and accomplishments at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, held in Seville, Spain.
Addressing the House, Prime Minister Oli stated that the conference contributed to fostering new global partnerships in economic diplomacy and further accelerated progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Representing the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), PM Oli advocated for justice and socio-economic development on their behalf. He noted that the adoption of the Seville Commitment has paved the way for these countries to receive enhanced global support and assistance. He reiterated Nepal's plan to graduate from LDC status to a developing country by 2026.
The Prime Minister shared details of his participation, including his leadership role in various plenary sessions, roundtable discussions, and presentations during the conference. He emphasized that Nepal demonstrated its potential for effective leadership among the 44 participating LDCs.
On the eve of the conference, PM Oli also addressed a gathering of civil society representatives, underscoring the importance of a proactive and engaged civil society. He highlighted that Nepal embraces a democratic and liberal system, allowing for civil society to thrive.
PM Oli further stated that Nepal's relations with the United Nations have been strengthened, particularly in advocating for the interests of LDCs. He called for greater global commitment to development financing, including formal and informal development cooperation and climate finance.
"Efforts have been made to highlight our development priorities and enhance partnerships," said the Prime Minister. "Nepal has demonstrated that it is a responsible and capable member of the international community, and we now have heightened expectations for advancing economic diplomacy and attracting foreign investment."
Prime Minister Oli departed for the conference on June 28 and returned home on July 4.
