Police let off YCL in-charge out of fear, say Dalits

BHAKTAPUR: Dalits today alleged that the security personnel were not taking action against the cadres of Young Communist League, who assaulted a Dalit family, due to fear.

Suman Thapa, YCL in-charge, Chittapol VDC ward no 9, had thrashed father, uncle and other relatives of Sagar Pairyar, a Dalit on December 16 for marrying Sangita Thapa Chhetri, a non-Dalit. On December 18, the aggrieved relatives had lodged a complaint against YCL in-charge Thapa at the District Administration Office and had pleaded for security and justice against caste-based discrimination.

“Two weeks since the incident took place and the security personnel are yet to summon Suman for investigation,” Saroj Pariyar, vice president, District Dalit Coordination Committee (DDCC), Bhaktapur, said here today.

“I believe they are also scared of YCL in-charge and the party,” he said, adding, “The security personnel had not even provided security to the family of Sagar and his Dalit neighbours.”

Pariyar said he was also threatened by the YCL in-charge for raising the case of Sagar and supporting their family members. “When I approached Mohan Dhungel, Chittapol VDC representative of the CPN-Maoist requesting him to convince Suman to accept the marriage and let the couple stay in their own house, he replied me saying that Suman had threatened me not to support the Dalit family, lest I would be killed,” he said.

However, Pushpa Chandra Ranjit, SP at the Metropolitan Police Sector in Bhaktapur said they have not yet received any written complaint from the victims urging them for security.

“Yesterday, they approached us seeking security to get recommendation letter for citizenship from the ward office. We promptly provided them some security personnel,” he said.

The newly married couple had no citizenship cards in order to get their marriage registration.

The CDO office in Bhaktapur had asked them to register their marriage at the ward office.
