Police open fire at absconding drug smuggler at discotheque in Sundhara
KATHMANDU: Police in the wee hours of Saturday opened fire at a notorious gangster, who had fled the jail and was enjoying night life, in a bid to arrest him at the Club Babylon Discotheque in Sundhara.
Rawanjeet Tamang aka Sanki Tamang was convicted of drugs smuggling and jailed for 10 years in the District Prison in Sindhupalchok.
He, however, was on the run after the massive earthquake on April 25 damaged the prison.
A police team deployed from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD), under the command of DSP Umesh Thapa, had spotted him at the discotheque and tried to arrest him.
But he and his friends allegedly obstructed the security personnel and tried to escape.
Then police was compelled to open fire at Tamang as the last resort to arrest the absconding jailbird, the MPCD said in a statement. The incident took place at around 1:45 am.
Police informed that Tamang has sustained injuries on his left leg. He was taken to the Bir Hospital for treatment.
One Umesh Shrestha has also been taken in custody on charge of creating obstruction in the police business and helping Tamang escaping.
Tamang was involved in various criminal activities and abduction also, according to police.
Further investigation into the incident is underway, police said.
