Prez consults NC leaders on NA poll ordinance

Kathmandu, December 22

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari today held a meeting with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and other senior leaders of the Nepali Congress told them that the issue of National Assembly Election Ordinance should be settled as per the spirit of the constitution and democratic norms.

President’s Personal Secretary Bhesh Raj Adhikari told THT that the president told the NC leaders that she had been consulting stakeholders, Election Commission and the Office of the Attorney General and would continue to consult other stakeholders on the issue.

The government has sent the ordinance to the president, but she has not endorsed it as the left alliance leaders opposed the single transferable vote system that the government has proposed in the ordinance.

Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel told THT that they told the president that okaying the ordinance was necessary to hold the National Assembly election in the absence of which the formation of the House of Representatives would not be complete and the new government could not be formed.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the President, the president thanked the government and other government bodies for successfully holding all three levels of elections.

The president emphasised on the need for consensus and collaboration between the political parties to achieve the goals of socio-economic progress.
