President prorogues House session

Kathmandu, February 17

President Bidya Devi Bhandari today prorogued the winter session of Legislature Parliament on the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Speaker Onsari Gharti informed today’s parliament meeting about the president’s message on ending the House session.

The session ended after 139 days. During this period, 44 meetings were held in 41 days and the House sat for a total of 37 hours 15 minutes, according to Speaker Gharti.

Of the 38 bills introduced in the House in the session, only six bills were passed, while others are still under consideration. The session elected the Prime Minister, Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

“The House has not been able to discharge its duties in a full-fledged manner due to absence of new Legislature-Parliament Regulations.

I hope, the parties would forge consensus on disputed issues of the regulations before the beginning of the next session,” said Gharti talking to reporters after today’s House meeting.

Earlier, today’s House meeting extended the term of the regulations drafting committee for the fourth time by one month. Agitating Madhes-based parties boycotted today’s House meeting.

“As the concerns of Madhes-based parties have not been addressed yet, we are boycotting the House,” said Narsingh Chaudhari of Sadbhawana Party.
