Prez summons top leaders of major parties

While the Constituent Assembly is making preparations to finalise the statute, major parties and the President have apparently widened gaps on some constitutional issues

KATHMANDU: President Ram Baran Yadav has summoned top leaders of Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, UCPN-Maoist and Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Democratic to discuss contemporary political issues including the on-going constitution drafting process.

According to the President's Press Advisor Rajendra Dahal, the meeting shall take place at 6 pm on Saturday at the President's Office in Sheetal Niwas.

While the Constituent Assembly is making preparations to finalise the statute, major parties and the President have apparently widened gaps on some constitutional issues.

On August 3, a meeting of the four parties had decided to draw attention of the President regarding his remarks on the constitution drafting.

Earlier in July, the President had invited top leaders of major political parties at his office and asked them to respect a recent interim order issued by the Supreme Court regarding the constitution drafting.

Responding to a writ, the Supreme Court had issued an interim order on June 19 telling the defendants, including the political parties, to ensure that all issues of federalism were resolved by this CA when it promulgated a new constitution.

The SC order was apparently against the June 8 deal signed by the parties.
