RC supplies relief to Koshi victims

KATHMANDU: Nepal Red Cross Society said it has provided non-food relief comprising tarpaulins, blankets, kitchen sets, clothing, jerry-cans and shelter tool-kits to more than 11,579 flood-hit families of Saptari and Sunsari districts.

In a press statement, NRCS said that it responded to the needs of the affected communities with the aid of Red Cross and civil society partners. The relief operation is complete now with additional distribution

of shelter tool-kits and tarpaulins, the humanitarian organisation said. It claims to have deployed over 2,800 volunteers in

the relief operation. Relief teams had distributed ready to eat food, non food relief items, staple food and had coordinated with district officials and local stakeholders after their initial assessment.

Eight VDCs, namely Paschim Kusaha, Shreepur, Haripur, Laukahi, Ghuskighat, Narshimha, Madhuban and Basantapur were affected — the first three being worst affected — by inundation of several months.

On August 18 last year, the Koshi River had breached its embankment and flooded a densely populated area of Sunsari district, displacing over 70,000 people.
