Republican constitution in peril, says Prachanda
KATHMANDU: Unified CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' today said that the drafting of the republican constitution could be periled.
"We have observed that the peace process is at a risk so the republican constitution could be harmed," said Prachanda at a function at Yala Maya Kendra in Lalitpur today.
Prachanda was addressing a function unveiling articles of former revolutionary leader Ram Raja Prasad Singh prepared by journalist Sitaram Baral. Prachanda said that unity among people was necessary to fight for restoration of civilian supremacy and national independence.
Saying that Singh was a legendary figure he expressed commitment to honour the valiant fighter for republic. The struggle between the fighters for the republic and the others were continuing, he claimed.
Citing accusations that Singh was close to the Monarch and India he said that revolutionary fighters can never be the agent of any power. Prachanda said "We had proposed him for the post of President with a belief that republican system would be institutionalised," adding, Singh deserved the post for his historic contribution. UCPN-M vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai also expressed doubt s that republican would be institutionalized in the country. He also expressed concern over Singh's deteriorating health and accused the government of ignoring him. "He deserves then highest honour from the republic of Nepal," he said.
Dr Manoj Kumar Singh, son of Singh and Khem Raj Bhatta 'Mayalu', former vice-chairman of Nawa Janabadi Morcha also discussed contribution of Singh. However, Singh could not attend the function due to poor health.
