Review army mobilisation, NHRC tells govt
Kathmandu, September 12
The National Human Rights Commission today urged the government to review its recent decision to mobilise Nepal Army in the riot-hit areas and asked all agitating parties to immediately halt their protest in order to pave the way for meaningful solution to the current political chaos.
Issuing a statement following an emergency meeting of the constitutional body today, NHRC Chairman Anup Raj Sharma condemned the brutal killing of Assistant Sub Inspector of Armed Police Force Thaman Bahadur BK in Mahottarai on Friday and demanded stern action against those involved in the heinous crime. Injured ASI BK was dragged out of a moving ambulance and lynched by protesters in Jaleshwor, Mahottari.
Stating that NHRC has been monitoring the situation as well as cases of human rights violation amid the protests and strikes in the Tarai districts, Sharma demanded legal action against those involved in recent police action in Mahottarai, Dhanusa and Saptari districts, which left 11 people dead.
Sharma also drew the attention of all concerned, stating that the ongoing strikes and protests had violated the people’s fundamental rights such as freedom of movement, freedom of expression and freedom of employment.
He asked the government to provide appropriate relief and compensation to the families of protesters and security personnel who lost lives during the recent violence and demanded proper treatment of the injured.
