KATHMANDU, JUNE 28
Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) parliamentary party leader Gyanendra Shahi has said the state should be held accountable alongside citizens if the government introduces stricter penalties for traffic rule violations.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Sunday, Shahi questioned reports that the government plans to impose fines of up to Rs 100,000 for traffic offences, arguing that accountability should apply equally to state agencies.
He proposed that the government should pay compensation if potholes are not repaired within 24 hours, traffic lights remain non-functional, driving licences are not issued within a week of passing the driving test, or traffic police mistreat citizens.
Shahi also called for legal action against concerned agencies and contractors if poor road conditions lead to fatal road accidents, saying laws should ensure responsibility on both sides rather than only penalising citizens.
