KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 2

The Supreme Court has ordered Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Senior Vice Chair of the CPN (Maoist Centre), to submit a written response in connection with a contempt of court case.

A division bench comprising Justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Shreekant Paudel scheduled a hearing within a week following the submission of Shrestha's response.

The case was filed at the Supreme Court by Ayush Dahal, a law student from Morang district, over a Facebook post made by Vice Chair Shrestha. In his petition, Dahal argued that Shrestha's post-alleging that justice could not be delivered without bribery and undue influence-risked undermining public trust in the judiciary.

The petitioner demanded stringent punishment under Section 17 of the Judicial Administration Act, 2073. If convicted, Shrestha, who is also a former Home Minister, could face up to one year of imprisonment.
