KATHMANDU, APRIL 23

The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a show-cause notice in response to a writ petition challenging the appointment of Dr Narayan Datt Kandel as Attorney General. The petition questions Dr Kandel's eligibility for the post.

A single bench of Justice Kumar Regmi issued the order on Thursday.

According to SC spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala, both parties have been summoned to appear on April 30 for a hearing to determine whether an interim order should be issued.

Three separate writ petitions were filed on Wednesday against Kandel's appointment. Following a preliminary hearing on Thursday, the Court issued the show-cause notice.

The petitions were filed by advocates including Shivaraj Baral, Madhav Basnet, and Dipak Joshi, who have challenged Dr Kandel's qualifications.

They argue that he does not meet the constitutional requirement of having at least 15 years of continuous legal practice to qualify for the position of Attorney General.
