KATHMANDU, MARCH 29

Habeas corpus petitions have been filed at the Supreme Court of Nepal challenging the arrests of CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Ramesh Lekhak, a senior leader of the Nepali Congress and former Home Minister.

The petition concerning Oli was filed by his spouse, Radhika Shakya, asserting that his detention is unlawful and seeking his immediate release. The Court has scheduled a hearing on the writ for tomorrow.

Similarly, a separate petition has been lodged before the Court contesting the arrest of Lekhak, likewise alleging that he was apprehended illegally. A hearing on this petition is also scheduled for tomorrow.

Both leaders were arrested yesterday following recommendations made by a high-level inquiry commission formed by the erstwhile interim government to investigate incidents related to the Gen Z movement that occurred on September 8 and 9, 2025.

The commission, headed by Gauri Bahadur Karki, had recommended that the government initiate legal proceedings against Oli and Lekhak on criminal charges for their alleged role in suppressing the Gen Z movement.
