KATHMANDU, MARCH 25

Discussions have been held on a security plan to open Thamel and Durbarmarg 24 hours a day.

Today, a meeting was convened at the District Administration Office Kathmandu with concerned agencies and businesspersons to discuss preparations for the 24-hour opening of Thamel and Darbarmarg areas.

The discussion was initiated following instructions from Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane to open Thamel and Durbarmarg areas around the clock.

A security plan, prepared by the District Security Committee to facilitate the continuous opening of Thamel and Durbarmarg, was deliberated upon.

Addressing the gathering, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Jitendra Basnet, stated that a more comprehensive plan would be developed and implemented based on the challenges and responses encountered after the markets are operational.

He mentioned the formation of a market management committee comprising businesspersons and local residents, or the delegation of responsibilities to the existing committee for business operations. CDO Basnet suggested maintaining consistent pricing for goods and services throughout the day and night.

Chief District Officer Basnet highlighted the need for a corresponding security system, considering the possibility of increased criminal activities compared to the present.

During the meeting, Chairperson of Thamel Tourism Development Council, Bhabiswar Sharma, expressed the council's longstanding demand for 24-hour business operations in Thamel.

Sanjay Adhikari, Treasurer of Durbarmarg Development Board, asserted that opening Durbarmarg 24 hours a day is appropriate in all respects.
