Maoist MP warns of legal action for unauthorised signature on impeachment motion
KATHMANDU: Maoist lawmaker Ram Narayan Bidari claimed that he did not sign on the impeachment motion moved against Chief Justice Sushila Karki and warned of seeking legal solution for using his signature in unauthorised way.
With signatures of 249 lawmakers from two ruling parties -- Nepali Congress and CPN Maoist Centre -- the motion was registered at the Parliament Secretariat yesterday.
Bidari, who is an advocate and a member of the Parliament's Impeachment Committee, told reporters today that his signature was collected for some other purpose.
He, however, expressed his readiness to not making it an issue if the signature was used as per the party chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's direction.
Speaking at the Reporter's Club in Kathmandu this afternoon, Bidari said the Parliament would hold discussion on the impeachment motion to find out whether the charges made against the Chief Justice are true.
Speaking at the same interaction programme, Nepali Congress lawmaker Min Bahadur Bishwarkarma, who is the proposer of the impeachment motion, claimed that the Parliament would impeach the Chief Justice.
To justify the move, Bishwakarma allegorically said the impeachment motion was brought to "prevent accident of a vehicle with steering failure". He repeated the allegations against the Chief Justice, who faced an automatic suspension from the post, and said the way she worked was like match-fixing.
CPN-UML Secretary Bhim Acharya, on the other hand, defended Chief Justice Karki, and said the move to impeach her was unfortunate and deplorable.
He accused the government of resorting to vengeance after Karki tried to stop it from making arbitrary decisions.
Brikesh Chandra Lal of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal said his party would hold internal discussion to build an opinion on the impeachment motion against Karki and new political developments.
According to him, the Parliament should be allowed to discuss the motion and serious allegations against the Chief Justice.
He made it clear that his party, which was recently formed after merger of six Madhesi parties, is more concerned about the amendment to the Constitution.
