KATHMANDU, MARCH 20
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has urged the public to remain on high alert as heavy rainfall, snowfall and strong winds are forecast in various parts of the country over the next few days.
Issuing a notice on Thursday, the authority, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, said the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has predicted heavy rain and snowfall at one or two places in the hilly and mountainous regions of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces on Friday.
The authority also warned of strong winds reaching speeds of up to 119 kilometres per hour from Friday in parts of Lumbini Province, including Dang and Nepalgunj, and surrounding districts. Similar conditions are expected on Saturday in eastern areas including Biratnagar, Dhankuta and Dharan.
According to NDRRMA, pre-monsoon conditions have heightened the risk of trees falling, damage to weak structures and roofs being blown away, as well as disruptions to electricity and communication services. It noted that recent windstorms have already resulted in casualties and injuries.
In an updated alert on Friday, the authority said moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning, hailstorms and gusty winds is likely in many places of Karnali and Sudurpashchim, and at some locations in the hilly regions of Gandaki, Lumbini and Koshi provinces. A few areas in Bagmati, Madhesh and the Tarai parts of Koshi Province may also witness similar weather conditions.
Heavy rainfall and snowfall are also likely at one or two places in the highlands of Karnali and Sudurpashchim, the authority added.
The NDRRMA has advised people in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during storms, and keep doors and windows securely closed. It has also urged the public to switch off fire sources, halt vehicles and move to safer places during strong winds, and avoid panic in crowded areas.
The authority further cautioned people against staying under weak structures, tall trees, and electric or telephone poles during storms. It also warned against touching fallen or hanging power lines and advised avoiding the use of electrical appliances during such conditions.
The public has been requested to regularly follow weather updates issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and safety advisories from the authority.
