Six persons held in connection with Rs 3.2 mln heist

KATHMANDU: A special police team from the Metropolitan Crime Division has arrested six persons for their alleged involvement in a broad daylight robbery of Rs 3.2 million from Mhaipi of KMC-29 recently.

The suspects were arrested from assorted locations of Kathmandu Metropolitan City yesterday.

In a statement today, MCD said Sambhu Pandey and Sunil Maharjan who masterminded the heist in which they allured their gullible target Nanda Kumar Bishowkarma of acquiring 1 kg of raw gold from them.

The victim withdrew a sum from a NMB bank before heading to make a deal with conmen at a guesthouse in Gangabu.

However, as soon as he reached Mhaipi, near Ashirbad College, two motorcycle-borne robbers intercepted Bishowkarma and took away his cash in a flash and disappeared from the scene at around 3:30 pm on Friday, reads the statement.

The victim, Nanda Kumar Bishowkarma, runs a Siddhartha Jewelry shop in Itahari of Sunsari district. Bishowkarma had known Pandey and Maharjan some four months ago.

Police identified the arrestees as Saroj Shrestha (22), Anjan Thapa (20) of Dhading district, Tara Bohara aka Jhamka Bahadur Bohara (28) of Baglung district, Lucky Puri aka Gyan Bahadur Puri (33) of Gulmi district,  Srijan Adhikari (23) and Santosh Bohara (24) of Gorkha district.

Police carried out a raid at Banasthali and Boharatole in KMC yesterday and seized cash Rs 4,17,000, 6 sets of mobile phones, a piece of metal alike gold, two motorcycles (Ba 82 Pa 4525, Ba 79 Pa 5298), two citizenship certificates and a passport, as stated in the statement.

Meanwhile, MCD has sent the suspects along with the seized items to the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range for further investigation and action today.

However, the mastermind behind the crime, Pandey and Maharjan, are at large.
