A two-day exhibition on Solid Waste Management to mark the Earth Day 2005 was organised at Jawalakhel. The exhibition is part of creating awareness in Lalitpur which was jointly organised by Lalitpur sub-Metropolitan City (LMC) and Clean Kathmandu Valley-JICA. According to Pradeep Amatya, section chief of Environment and Sanitation Section of LMC, 67.5 per cent of waste collected in Lalitpur is organic, therefore composting is the best way of managing it. The LMC produces 75 tonnes of waste everyday but only 60 tonnes is collected. According to a survey conducted on 7,000 samples in Lalitpur by SILT consultants in 2004, 67.5 per cent of waste collected was organic. Amatya informed that the LMC has been providing training on composting the waste to 600 households with follow up programmes to reduce waste production and reuse it.
