KATHMANDU, APRIL 8

Speaker Devraj Ghimire has affirmed that Nepal is a nation deeply committed to the principle of peaceful co-existence, as taught by Gautam Buddha.

He made these remarks during a conference titled "Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Bandung Spirit: The Role of Parliaments in Upholding the Bandung Principles," held as part of the 4th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network 2025, on the sidelines of the 150th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Speaker Ghimire stated, "Nepal is a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement and a nation that consistently advocates for and upholds the principle of peaceful co-existence among nations worldwide."

Highlighting Nepal's commitment to inclusive governance, he noted that the country's parliament has long prioritized policy-making and addressing public concerns through the highest standards of parliamentary practice. He further emphasized that Nepal's Constitution enshrines the principles of non-alignment and peace, reflecting the country's long-standing dedication to these ideals, according to the Speaker's Secretariat.

Speaker Ghimire also underscored Nepal's transition from a decade-long internal conflict through peaceful means, stating, "Our parliament serves as a platform where the voices of citizens are echoed, democracy is safeguarded, and policies are crafted to advance peace, justice, and sustainable development. It is our collective responsibility to uphold and protect these values."

Reaffirming Nepal's unwavering commitment to the Bandung Principles, he called upon all nations to unite in building a more just, peaceful, and prosperous world. "Let us rekindle the light inherent in the Bandung Spirit-a guiding force for our actions and a source of inspiration for future generations. Through cooperation, we can advance toward shared progress, where the Bandung Spirit prevails," he added.

Reflecting on the 1955 Bandung Conference, which laid the foundation for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Speaker Ghimire acknowledged its historic role in securing political independence, decolonization, and sovereignty for many nations across the globe.
