KATHMANDU, JANUARY 30
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, has urged local governments to prioritize investment in technical education, challenging the prevailing notion that development is solely about physical infrastructure.
Inaugurating the sixth convention of the second Municipal Assembly of Birtamod Municipality on Thursday, Speaker Ghimire emphasized the need to promote applied and technical education alongside theoretical learning, stating, "This is a national imperative."
He underscored that theoretical education alone is insufficient for producing skilled human resources. "The era of information technology has begun, and local governments must take the initiative in establishing technical schools," he asserted.
Furthermore, he urged local authorities to pursue development initiatives through well-formulated master plans.
Highlighting the consequences of a lack of creative and labor-based technical education, he pointed out that a significant portion of the workforce is being drawn into unproductive tendencies. "Our current education system is largely generating unemployed graduates," he observed.
Speaker Ghimire also stressed that neither the Constitution nor existing laws prohibit local governments from establishing and operating technical and cultural schools within their jurisdictions.
He concluded by emphasizing that employment-oriented and culturally aware human resources should be recognized as a fundamental pillar of national development.
