Kathmandu, March 17

Student unions affiliated to various political parties today decided to mount pressure on the government to stop granting permission to schools affiliated to foreign secondary education boards to operate in the country.

A meeting of 10 student unions aligned to various political parties, including CPN-UML, Unified CPN-Maoist and Nepali Congress, in the capital took a decision to this effect.

A joint press statement issued by the student unions said the government should take action against educational institutions operating without registration.

“We are also going to draw the attention of the Tribhuvan University Executive Council through vice chancellor to provide 20 per cent scholarship to students in constituent campuses of TU.

Recently, the TU had decided to provide only 10 per cent scholarship to students,” it said. The unions have also warned of protests if their demands were not met.

Similarly, the statement said the student unions would draw the attention of the Prime Minister towards black marketing of essential commodities, inflation, corruption and other anomalies in the country.

They also demanded that that government intervene in the dispute between the TU and Agriculture and Forestry University.

The student unions have also decided to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister regarding the issues.
