Kathmandu, May 16:

The youth of Kathmandu have found a new way of drawing the attention of the traditional families towards community-based solid waste management problem. A group performed street plays to raise awareness on the garbage problem in the densely populated areas of the city. "We are on the one hand trying to revive the age-old tradition of performing street plays and on the other trying to raise awareness on waste management," said Ramesh Kaji Sthapit, director of the play. The street play "Thula Thula Jin" (Now I understand), written by Shuresh Kiran, was performed at Brahma Tole today on the first day of the campaign. It concentrates on bomb hoaxes created by the careless disposal of kitchen waste in the middle of the streets. Later, a social worker teaches them the easy way of utilising the bio-degradable waste among other materials. The play in Newari language drew large crowds as this tradition is getting extinct in the capital.
