Hearing on IG appointment deferred till Wednesday

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court on Sunday postponed the hearing on two cases filed against the appointment of Nepal Police DIG Jaya Bahadur Chand to the post of Inspector General of national police organisation for Wednesday*.

Earlier, Chief Justice Sushila Karki had assigned the division bench of Justice duo Hari Krishna Karki and Ishwor Prasad Khatiwada to conduct the hearing.

However, the division bench postponed the hearing after finding out that Office of the Attorney General was not informed about a supplementary application filed by advocate Kapil dev Dhakal over the case, the SC Co-spokesperson Bishwaraj Paudel told the Rastriya Samachar Samiti.

Earlier, the government on February 12 had appointed Chand to the post of Nepal Police Chief.

The Court, however, had stayed the decision after it was moved against the appointment claiming the decision violated the tradition of seniority.

Advocate Kapil Dev Dhakal had filed the case.

The next day, the Court had again barred Chand from assuming office in response to another writ filed by his batchmate DIG Nawa Raj Silwal.

Both of the interim orders had been issued till the next hearing on the case. Now, the orders would be effective till Wednesday, according to Paudel.
