Tarai party seeks fast track census

Kathmandu, September 6:

Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) passed two resolutions calling on the government to scrap its decision to constitute a separate state-restructuring ministry.

The Maoist-led government had formed the Culture and State Restructuring Ministry. The new government has also renamed some ministries.

“The government should stay neutral on the issue of state restructuring by forming a separate Ministry of State Restructuring. The formation of the Ministy of Culture and State Restructuring indicates that the government plans to dictate state restructuring,” said Tarai Madhes Democratic Party leader Sarbendra Nath Shukla.

Party leader Hridayesh Tripathi had moved a proposal in the central working committee meeting of the Tarai Madhes Democratic Party today, demanding that the government scrap its decision to form the State Restructuring Ministry.

The Tarai Madhes Democratic Party has also passed a separate resolution urging the government to conduct a fast track census within six to eight months.

He said the government could gather information on actual figure of ethnic groups only through a fast track census as it takes about 12 to 18 months to conduct census under normal circumstances. Shukla further added that the nation needed to have actual figure of ethnic groups, which could serve as an important

basis for the demarcation of the proposed provinces.
