Task forces meet, but no progress

KATHMANDU: Two task forces representing the major three parties and the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front held a meeting on Wednesday after a gap of days, but could not make any concrete progress over differences.

The leaders had sat for the meeting to discuss formation of a political mechanism in a bid to resolve differences over demarcation of  federal units.

Leaders participating in the meeting said the meeting could not make any progress owing to differences over terms of reference of the body.

Nepali Congress leader Mahesh Acharya told the Rastriya Samachar Samiti after the meeting that the negotiators were trying to reword the terms of reference so that both sides could agree on the document.

Likewise, Sadbhawana Party Co-Chairman Laxman Lal Karna said all demands of the United Democratic Madhesi Front must be met in a package. He also accused the government of not being serious toward solving the issue through talks.

The meeting shall resume on Thursday, according to the leaders.

Earlier last week, the major parties and the agitating Front had agreed to resolve differences over demarcation through a political mechanism.

They, however, are yet to form the body owing to differing views on its rights and responsibilities. The big parties are planning to form such a mechanism before Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's visit to India beginning Friday.
