Tht watch
Kathmandu, June 24:
The newly constructed road in Sangam Sagarmatha Marga that links Ghattekulo chowk with the main road in Anamnagar has turned into a dumping site.
Piles of garbage can been seen left uncollected in the Ghattekulo-Anamnagar stretch of the road, which was repaired in January. Passers-by and locals say they are facing a hard time due to the stinking garbage dumped on the road.
It becomes hard to breathe when one walks past the filthy garbage pile, says Mamata Shrestha, a passer-by. Locals residing in the area say the garbage stench has been an
irritant.
Though the locals have formed the Sangam Sagarmatha Marga Users’ Committee to repair the road and maintain cleanliness in the area, the area has been converted into a dumping site after the construction of the road was completed.
In order to identify those dumping waste in the area, locals have been keeping an eye till midnight for the last a few days. “When we keep a vigil in the area, nobody dumps the waste, but the next morning we again find garbage piled up on the road,” they said.
According to the users’ committee, it has recruited sweepers to clean the road every day. For this, each household is asked to fork out Rs 50. Besides, the KMC also collects the garbage from the area, but the problem still remain.
Who is looking into it
With the increasing complaints against dumping of garbage secretly on the road, the
users’ committee is planning to call a meeting of the locals on June 14.
Though the people involved in such practice have not been identified, we will appeal to the locals to behave in a civilised manner and not to dump garbage on the road.
Action will be taken against the culprits. We are also planning to construct a small temple nearby to deter people from dumping the waste on the road.
