Tribhuvan University to award honorary doctorate to Ghimire, Rai

Kathmandu, September 20

The Tribhuvan University today decided to award honorary doctorate degrees to national poet Madhav Ghimire and senior litterateur Indra Bahadur Rai, a resident of Darjeeling.

The general assembly meeting of the TU took the decision on the recommendation of permanent committee of the TU Academic Council.

The TU Senate meeting held today passed the 53rd Grace List for the convocation, the annual budget for the fiscal year 2015/16, 55th annual report of TU and other programmes.

Altogether 61,716 students are expected to attend the TU convocation scheduled for December 2.

Speaking at the programme, Education minister Chitra Lekha Yadav, who is also the co-chancellor of TU, said the government will take initiatives to transform TU as the central university.

She also expressed her commitment to improving the relationship between the TU and Mid-Western University, Far-Western University and Agriculture and Forestry University.

Prof Tirtha Khaniya, vice chancellor, TU, said as the university has not been able to hold Free Students’ Union election for a long time, he will be holding talks with the student unions for the conduct of polls at the earliest.

He also assured of talks with three universities that have differences with the TU.

Lack of physical infrastructure, lack of budget, reduction in grants from the government, lack of budget for pension and maintenance of the university were some of the challenges faced by the TU, he said.

TU Registrar Prof Chandra Mani Poudel announced a budget of Rs 17.68 billion for the TU for the current fiscal year. He said they have allocated budget for the reconstruction of the main building of TU, deans’ offices, faculties and campuses which were destroyed in the great earthquake. He said the reconstruction works would be completed within three years.
