TU contract teachers stage sit-in at VC office

KIRTIPUR: Teachers working on a contract basis for Tribhuvan University today staged a sit-in in front of the office of the Vice Chancellor for the second consecutive day demanding permanency of job.

Talking to The Himalayan Times, Dhakaram Sharma, central vice president, Progressive Professors' Association Contract Coordination Committee, said none of the teachers hired since 2007 on contract basis had been given permanent status.

"TU has been flouting its statutory provision of announcing vacancies every six months. It has not recruited teachers on that basis for the last 12 years," he added. "We want the TU to hold a special internal competition for contract-basis teachers to grant them permanency."

"We have tried to draw the attention of TU officials in a peaceful way and without hampering the teaching-learning activities," he said. "The TU should listen to us and pave way for solution at the earliest."

He lamented that numerous memoranda they submitted to officials concerned had not been taken seriously. Sharma threatened to launch tougher programmes of protest if their peaceful sit-in was not responded to. TU has employed around 2,000 teachers on contract.
