Kathmandu, January 7:

Tribhuvan University today announced the formation of a committee to ammend the Free Students’ Union (FSU) constituition in order to monitor and check irregularities that may occur at its offices in the campuses.

“A committee has been formed under the leadership of Professor Kanak Bikram Thapa to make necessary ammendments in the FSU constituition that clearly states of taking action against embezzlement,” said Mahendra Singh, rector at Tribhuvan University (TU) during an interaction held here today. The issue was raised when the FSU members of Shanker Dev Campus made public the embezzlement of Rs 10,23000 by the Free Students’ Union chairman.

The FSU of Shanker Dev Campus had the representation of the NSU and the ANNFSU members. Dek Raj Bhattarai, Free Students’ Union (FSU) Chairman of Shanker Dev Campus said that he had used the money for the welfare of the students. He agreed to using Rs 50,000 from the FSU students’ welfare fund for travelling abroad as it was his right as the FSU chairman. “It is a ploy to assassinate my character,” said Bhattarai.Amoda Shrestha, campus chief of Shankher Dev Campus said that campus chief should be given the right to take action against corruption and irregulaties in campuses. “There is no control mechanism to check such irregularities,” said Shrestha. “The most I could do as a campus chief was to send an application to TU central office to investigate the case,” said Shrestha. “The rights of campus chief has not been clearified in the FSU constituition.”

Shrestha said that in most of the campuses, their chiefs had become helpless scarecrows.

“There should be thorough investigation into the matter as it concerns the rights of 6,000 students.” said Shrestha.Kalyan Gurung, joint general secretary of Nepal Students’ Union close to NC (Democratic) said that the investigation is going on and if Bhattarai is found guilty then the students union will take action against him.

“But no party has the right to assassinate anyone’s character,” said Gurung. Yagya Raj Sunuwar, secretary of All Nepal National Free Students’ Union said that no vested interests should play politics in the name of FSU.
