KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 24

Tribhuvan University (TU) has banned the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in exams, warning that any student found using it will have their exam annulled.

This decision was made by the TU Exam Reform Committee on Monday during a meeting chaired by committee head and Rector Prof. Dr. Khadga KC. The committee observed that reliance on technology has contributed to a decline in reading culture. The ban on AI usage aims to discourage cheating during exams, the committee noted.

Dr. KC further emphasized that creativity and originality are indicators of a student's integrity, which is why the ban on AI was implemented. "Students' reading culture is eroding, and cheating is becoming prevalent; thus, we issued a notice to discourage the misuse of technology," he stated.

Additionally, the use of digital devices such as mobile phones and smartwatches is prohibited in the examination hall. TU felt compelled to take this action after receiving complaints about digital devices being misused for cheating.

Meanwhile, the country's oldest university has provided an opportunity for students who have failed to complete academic programs since 2058 BS and the semester system from 2069 BS in the fields of humanities, education, management, science and technology, and law to sit for exams.
