Two Norvic docs face suspension

Kathmandu, March 10

Nepal Medical Council has suspended two doctors of Norvic International Hospital.

Dr Prabin Nepal and Dr Sailaj Ranjitkar have been suspended for their involvement in the wrong site surgery of a patient at the hospital.

According to the ethical committee of NMC, doctors admitted that it was their mistake. Dr Dhundiraj Paudel, chief of ethical committee of the council, said that the duration for suspension was yet to be fixed and they would not be allowed to work during the suspension period.

He said, “Although there was no complaint registered with the council about the case from the victim’s side, medical council itself conducted the investigation into the case after huge media pressure. As per the rule of medical council, investigation into such cases begins only after victims file a complaint against doctors or hospitals.”

Bindu Poudel, 38, of Chitwan was admitted to Norvic International Hospital for treatment of ligament injury in her left leg. She underwent surgery on February 23. However, her relatives later complained that doctors involved in her treatment had operated on the right leg instead of the left.

Hospital administration and the family of the patient have already signed an agreement.

As per the agreement, the hospital has promised not to repeat the mistake in future. It has also agreed to operate on the patient’s left leg and provide free treatment if the patient faces any other medical complications on the leg wrongly operated by its doctors. It has also agreed to finance the victim’s treatment in a foreign hospital, if required.

The hospital has decided to issue a free treatment card to the patient. In addition, the hospital has also agreed to hire experts from other hospitals for her treatment, if required.

Similarly, the hospital has agreed to bear all expenses if the patient needs to be taken to abroad for treatment.
