UDMF asks NHRC to probe Tarai violence

KATHMANDU: The agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front on Sunday urged the National Human Rights Commission to probe violent incidents that occurred during the agitation. A UDMF team handed over a memorandum to Anup Raj Sharma, chairman of the Commission at its central office in Pulchowk, Lalitpur. NHRC spokesperson Mohana Ansari said the Front demanded action against human rights violators in accordance with criminal laws. The alliance delegates argued that the government had suppressed their protest programmes notwithstanding their right to carry out peaceful demonstration. In response, Sharma said the government should address the demands of protest programmes carried out for identity and existence with seriousness. He assured the delegation that NHRC was monitoring and investigating protest-related violent incidents.
