Calls for a fear-free environment, transparency ahead of elections
KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 13
CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli today sharply criticized the government, accusing it of failing to create a conducive environment for elections despite announcing the polling date.
Addressing the party's 11th National Congress in Bhaktapur, Oli said the government had focused on "talks without homework" and demanded transparency in decision-making, along with free mobility for political leaders to carry out party activities.
He said a fear-free atmosphere, including the recovery of looted weapons and the return of escaped inmates, was essential for credible elections. Instead, Oli accused the government of fueling hatred, discouraging dialogue and resorting to what he termed "media trials."
"Cases are being forwarded instead of discussions," said Oli, a former prime minister, condemning prohibitory orders imposed on political leaders. He warned that threats, coercion and revenge undermine both elections and the democratic system.
Oli said the public aspired to free and fair elections and reiterated that UML was fully prepared for polls. However, he expressed concern over what he described as threats replacing healthy political competition.
The UML chair called for cooperation among political parties to reinstate the dissolved House of Representatives, arguing that the current situation was not conducive to holding elections.
Referring to criticism from some youth groups, Oli rejected claims that UML and other established parties were against Generation Z, saying such accusations were misleading and had been countered with facts.
He also criticized a recent government agreement with Gen Z groups, alleging it was aimed at destabilizing the political system. Oli claimed the September 8–9 demonstrations were not merely expressions of youth frustration but also attempts to undermine the constitution and democratic order.
Stressing the need for unity, Oli said attacks on democracy and the constitution must be countered through political cooperation.
