Valley country’s crime capital: Report

Kathmandu, November 16:

The tri-monthly sample survey of crimes in the Kathmandu valley revealed that three people are murdered here every week. Another three people are kidnapped, while three more are targeted by armed looters.

SP Devendra Subedi of the Metropolitan Police Crime Division said today that the sample survey of the last three months of the Nepali calendar revealed that the valley was becoming a dangerous place with rapid increase in population, unemployment and use of new technologies by the criminals. As many as 37 incidents of theft and seven incidents of counterfeit crime are committed in a week on an average.

Subedi claimed that the use of alcohol could be the major cause behind the rise in the number

of crimes. Of the 3,924 people arrested during the period, 82 per cent (3214) were alcoholic. Eighty-eight per cent of the arrested were non-vegetarians. He said 90 per cent of the arrested were male, nine per cent were female and remaining were third-genders.

A comparative analysis of major criminal activities of the valley and the nation revealed that out of five incidents of armed robbery committed in the country in a week, two were recorded

in the valley and the valley contributed 48 per cent of the total crimes occurring throughout the country. The analysis also showed that 24 per cent of homicide cases were committed in the valley.

Of the 10 incidents of bank frauds recorded in the country this fiscal, three were recorded in the valley. Also, 61 per cent of total abductions occurred in the valley. The analysis also showed that the valley witnessed 36 per cent of the total counterfeit crimes.
