Independent candidate Balen Shah, UML's Sunita Dangol maintain edge against opponents in vote tally for KMC Mayor, Deputy Mayor

The counting of votes all across the country is moving at snail's pace, Kathmandu metropolis is no exception to which.

Counting of votes for Kathmandu Metropolitan City elections had begun on Saturday morning. However, 30 hours later - till the time this update was filed - only 7500 of around 190,000 total votes cast have been tallied.

Of the votes that have been counted so far, 3110 have been secured by the much in-news independent candidate Balendra 'Balen' Shah, giving him a fair lead against other KMC Mayor hopefuls.

Trailing at the second position is CPN-UML's candidate Keshav Sthapit , who has garnered 1645 votes so far, 1465 less than that of Shah.

Announcement of Sthapit's candidacy, a former Provincial minister who had been sacked following #MeToo allegations, was seen as a shocking move on part of the UML.

Meanwhile, ruling-coalition candidate, Nepali Congress' Sirjana Shrestha has received 1602 votes, making the race for second spot tighter.

Likewise, Rastriya Prajatantra Party's Madan Das Shrestha and another independent candidate Suman Sayami have received 165 and 161 votes, respectively.

Sunita Dangol comfortably leading deputy-mayoral race

Kathmandu denizens have voted open heartedly for CPN-UML's deputy-mayor candidate Sunita Dangol as she has received 2884 votes. Her votes are thrice as much as her closest opponent Rameshwar Shrestha's 823 votes, making her a clear frontrunner with a safe gap.

RPP's Binita Magaiya has secured 670 votes.
