KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 28

A writ petition questioning the academic qualifications of Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Mahaprasad Adhikari has been filed at the Supreme Court.

In the petition filed today, it is claimed that Governor Adhikari's academic qualifications are insufficient for assuming the responsibilities of the post.

Govinda Ghimire, the joint-spokesperson of the Supreme Court, stated that a hearing on the petition will take place on Friday.

The government appointed Adhikari as the governor of the Central Bank on 24 Chait, 2076 BS.

According to Section 20 of the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, the governor should have a master's degree in economics, monetary issues, banking, finance, commerce, management, public administration, statistics, mathematics, or law, along with relevant experience.

Advocates Deepakraj Joshi, Pratapsingh Thakurathi, Damodar Timilsana, and Chudamani Bhandari filed the writ petition, claiming that Adhikari obtained the equivalence of a master's degree from Tribhuvan University.

However, the law stipulates that he must have passed the master's level, and therefore, he is not qualified on the basis of equivalence.
