Writ petition filed against EC over PR cluster criteria

Kathmandu, October 9

Advocate Dipendra Jha today filed a writ petition against the Election Commission for its directives that require the parties to field all clusters under Proportional Representation electoral system.

Advocate Jha argued that as per the newly passed Election of House of Representatives Members and Election of Provincial Assembly Members, political parties securing less than 10 per cent votes need to meet the criteria for women only and not other clusters but the EC’s directives required that all parties irrespective of their vote shares should meet the criteria of all PR clusters.

In the writ petition, Jha has demanded that the EC directives relating to choosing candidates under parliamentary and provincial assembly elections should be quashed and the poll panel should be ordered to formulate its bylaws and directives as per the newly passed Election of House of Representatives Members and Election of Provincial Assembly Members.

The first hearing of the case has been scheduled for tomorrow.
