Bhim Bahadur Kumar, 41, a retired army soldier from Gorkha, Nepal, faced a life-changing event during the Maoist insurgency when he lost one of his legs in an ambush at the age of 22 in Bhojpur district. Bhim had many suicidal thoughts and struggled with feelings of hopelessness for a long time. However, he gradually gained hope and confidence after receiving an artificial leg. By 32, Bhim began swimming professionally, dedicating himself to the sport and gradually reclaiming his strength and abilities. Despite this tragedy, Bhim's spirit turned into an inspiration for many.

As a child, Bhim learned to swim in the Daraudi River, but it wasn't until after his injury that he pursued swimming professionally. Leaving his family behind in Gorkha, Bhim moved into an Army guest house to train for the Paralympics. He has won several national trophies in Nepal, but his dream of competing in the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020 was dashed. Inspired by a friend, Bhim found the courage to start swimming again and gained his first international experience in China.

Now, Bhim is preparing for his first qualified Paralympic Games in Paris 2024, representing Nepal alongside two other athletes. Training has been tough and financially challenging. His dedicated coach, Bijen Shrestha, has been by his side for four years, helping him navigate these difficulties. The swimming club and supportive parents have also pitched in to cover his high equipment costs.

Bhim recently competed against able-bodied athletes and made his coach proud. Despite the hardships, he dreams of winning a medal for Nepal. "The privileges we get are minimal, but I make the most of what I have," Bhim says.

Looking after his family while chasing his dream is difficult, but Bhim remains determined. He hopes his success will pave the way for future para-athletes in Nepal. Bhim wishes the government and National Sports Council would better support athletes with disabilities, ensuring they don't face the same financial struggles.

Bhim now plans to dedicate the rest of his life to sports. He says dreams can be achieved despite any obstacles.
