KATHMANDU: People from various walks of life on Wednesday reached the front gate of Singha Durbar and paid tribute to King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founding father of modern Nepal, who unified various principalities to establish a single nation.

Every year, Poush 27 of Nepali calendar, the birth anniversary of the King, is celebrated as the Prithvi Jayanti or National Unity Day.

Before Nepal was a republic, the day would be an occasion of state celebrations with a public holiday.

Though the government ended the tradition in 2007, celebrations have continued at the people's level.

Of late, voices have been raised to revive the celebrations and holiday as it was Shah who fundamentally contributed to the existence of the nation.
