BIRGUNJ, APRIL 28

The last 72 hours have been excruciatingly difficult for the health personnel here as 12 COVID-19 patients admitted in treatment facility have succumbed to the infection in Birgunj.

The now-deceased COVID-19 patients had been receiving treatment at the Birgunj-based Narayani Hospital. Among the 12 recorded fatalities, 7 were residents of Parsa district, 3 hailed from Bara while one each were from Rautahat and Sarlahi districts.

On Monday, three lives were lost while on the following day four deaths from the infection were recorded and the most number of the infected --five persons -- were reported dead today.

All the deceased were diagnosed with severe pneumonia, informed the Hospital.

According to the data made available by the Narayani Hospital, as cases of the infection continue to rise at an alarming rate, so have the COVID-19 fatalities.

As authorities are concentrating on COVID-19 woes of the Kathmandu valley, attention also needs to be drawn toward Birgunj's struggles with the pandemic as the unmonitored entry of people through the metropolitan's open border with India could further complicate the situation.
