229 cases of domestic violence registered at NWC

KATHMANDU: Two hundred and twenty-nine cases of domestic violence have been registered with the National Women Commission (NWC) in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2076/77 BS.

NWC secretary Dipendra Kafle said, among the various incidents of violence against women (VAW), the Commission has been getting a large number of cases related to domestic violence.

According to Kafle, during this period, 41 cases related to other types of violence were registered at NWC. He said, although it is a challenge to completely eliminate the incidents of domestic violence, the Commission aims to minimise them.

In view of the cases of domestic violence received by NWC, it is found that women from all backgrounds are the victims of domestic violence, irrespective of their level of education or economic status.

Secretary Kafle further stated that NWC is conducting public awareness programmes at the community level for reducing domestic violence.

NWC has been registering VAW-related cases, forwarding them to the police for action, providing legal assistance and psycho-social counselling to the victims, rehabilitating the victims in their families, and sending them to safe shelters when required.
