KATHMANDU, APRIL 29

At least 34 people have died and 139 others were injured in 616 disaster-related incidents reported across the country over the past 15 days, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

The incidents, recorded between April 14 and 29, affected 829 families. A total of 65 houses were completely destroyed and 250 suffered partial damage, while 78 cowsheds were damaged and 213 livestock were killed. The estimated financial loss stands at around Rs 109.25 million.

Fire incidents accounted for the highest number of cases, with 267 reported, claiming eight lives and causing property damage worth approximately Rs 97.5 million.

Lightning strikes resulted in nine deaths and 49 injuries in 74 incidents, while 44 storm-related incidents affected 319 families and caused losses of around Rs 8.3 million.

Other reported disasters include snakebites, wildfires, heavy rainfall, floods and animal attacks.

Spokesperson Shanti Mahat attributed the rise in fire and wildfire incidents to dry weather, rising temperatures and human negligence, stressing the need for improved preparedness, public awareness and effective disaster management measures.
