5 projects on Nepal-India talks table: Sindhe

New Delhi, August 11:

Union Energy minister of India Shushil Kumar Sindhe told Lok Sabha today that the government of India is holding talks with the officials of Nepal at different levels for the construction of the Karnali multipurpose project, Pancheshwor multipurpose project, Sapta Koshi high dam, Sunkoshi reservoir and diversion scheme, and Budhi Gandaki hydel project.

The detailed project reports will first be prepared first, he said.

Works on the proposed projects would begin if the projects are found to be feasible and agreements are reached between the two countries, the minister further said.

The Karnali Chisapani hydel project will generate 10,800 MW of electricity. According to a report prepared by the Finance Ministry of Nepal, the project will cost $10 billion.

Talks are under way at the government-level on constructing the 56-MW Mahakali Pancheshwor multipurpose project, Sindhe said.

Feasibility studies of the Sapta Koshi high dam and Sunkoshi storage and diversion scheme are being carried out, the energy minister further said.

According to a feasibility study carried out by India, 3,300 MW power can be generated from these projects. According to the study, these projects will also help control floods.
