COVID-19 Livelihoods and Economic Recovery Project- Bajura disbursed over Rs 9 crores in the district

BAJURA, JULY 9

Eight hundred individuals from five local levels of Bajura district were provided with financial support under the COVID-19 Livelihoods and Economic Recovery Project-Bajura, on Thursday.

The project provided each person with Rs 24,000, amounting to a total of Rs 19,200,000.

UK Aid/FCDO, World Food Programme and Integrated Development Society (IDS) Nepal had provided the aid which was then distributed by COVID-19, LERP-Bajura in coordination with local levels.

The cash aid was extended in a bid to help the daily wage earners who have been struggling to earn their livelihood due to limited access to food supplies and lack of income generation opportunities due to the Covid-19 pandemic, informed Tara Babu Khati, Programme Manager at IDS.

Similarly, as many as 2,163 unemployed people also were provided with the opportunity of undertaking 40 days of paid work.

The aforementioned group were employed in various development-related construction works at the community level and were paid Rs 600 per day.

Following this project, as many as 69 development projects have been built in five local levels. The construction projects were selected according to the needs and selection of the local level.

The programme provided financial support to 117 people classified into various vulnerable groups in Gaumul Rural Municipality, 260 in Budhinanda Municipality, 129 in Himali Rural Municipality, 167 in Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality and 127 people in Jagganath Rural Municipality.

The recipients were selected by the local levels, added Khati.

Patients of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, malnutrition and chronic disease, along with single women and victims of gender violence were among the recipients, informed Mukesh Sharma, Project Field Coordinator at IDS.

During the Covid pandemic, the members of the risk-group and daily wage earners that could not participate in the construction works have been provided with financial support, said Chirinjivi Shahi, Chair of Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality.

"The financial aid has helped me and my daughter tremendously and allowed me to bring food to the table," said Kali Kami (55) of Gaumul-2, a single parent, who is of unsound health.

The project started on November 15, 2020, and ended on June 15 2021.

The Covid-19, LERP-Bajura project expended a total of Rs 94,176,011 in the district.
