KATHMANDU, JANUARY 13
A total of 85 candidates listed under the proportional representation (PR) system for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) elections withdrew their names on Monday, the Election Commission (EC) said.
The candidates were part of the closed lists submitted by political parties on December 28 and 29, and withdrawals were made within the deadline set by the EC.
According to the Commission, 21 candidates from the Janata Samajwadi Party and 20 from the Janamat Party withdrew their names. Candidates from CPN (UML), Nepali Communist Party, Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party also opted out.
The EC said the Janata Samajwadi Party and the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party made changes to their lists following adjustments after the merger of the two parties.
The revised PR closed lists will be made public on January 18 for claims and objections, while the final list will be published on February 3.
A total of 64 political parties have submitted PR closed lists for the March 5 elections. Of them, 54 parties are using their own election symbols, while 10 will contest under a common symbol.
Out of the 275-member House, 110 lawmakers will be elected through the PR system and 165 through the first-past-the-post system. The EC said 93 parties had initially applied to contest under the PR system.
