Threats and harassment top the list; Bagmati Province reports highest number of incidents

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 13

Press Council Nepal has recorded 121 incidents of press freedom violations in 2025, according to data from the Council's regular monitoring and registered complaints.

The monitoring, covering the period from January 1 to December 31, 2025, shows that threats and harassment were the most common violations, with 50 cases. Other reported violations include 37 cases of attacks or assaults, 15 incidents of professional insecurity, 9 cases of seizure or obstruction, 5 cases of arrest or attempted arrest, 2 policy restrictions, 2 suspicious deaths, and 1 case of gender-based violence.

Province-wise, Bagmati Province reported the highest number of incidents with 62, followed by Madhesh (27), Sudurpaschim (8), Koshi (7), Lumbini and Gandaki (6 each), and Karnali (5).

Gender-wise analysis indicates that 200 journalists and media personnel were affected, including 190 men and 10 women.

The Council also noted 10 cases of press freedom misuse during the year, with 5 in Bagmati, 4 in Madhesh, and 1 in Karnali Province.
