851 rescued from traffickers

Maiti Nepal, Jhapa, has so far rescued 851 girls and children from being trafficked and from different kinds of violence and rehabilitated them. This information was given by regional coordinator of Maiti Nepal, Govinda Ghimire, at an interaction with reporters held in Biratnagar today.

According to Ghimire, 679 girls were rescued from being trafficked; 102 were rescued from different brothels in Mumbai, Kolkata, Siliguri and Pune, India; 26 women were rescued from domestic violence; two were rape victims and 14 were orphans.

The organisation has taken action against 20 women involved in prostitution and aided eight women without guardians during child birth, he said. Apart from this, at least 35 children are being given education at a school up to grade 1 by Kakadbhita-based Maiti Nepal, he said, adding children who pass grade 1 have been admitted to public schools with assistance from Maiti Nepal. Maiti Nepal has also launched anti-trafficking awareness programmes in different places including Arjundhara, Gaurigunj and Damak municipality.
