Abide by CPA, NHRC tells govt, Maoists

Kathmandu, November 20:

The National Human Rights Commission today rapped the government and the Maoists for not abiding by the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) signed by them exactly two years ago.

The rights watchdog stated that there was not much improvement in the state of human rights even after two years of signing the CPA.

NHRC is said to have received many complaints in the period that the government and the Maoists were responsible for cases of disappearance. NHRC has 30 complaints of forced disappearances against the Maoists and 32 against the security forces; the security forces allegedly killed 70 and the Maoists 36 in the period.

The Maoists allegedly seized the property of 76 individuals while the security forces did the same to five persons in the period. The Maoists threatened 24 people while the security forces threatened seven, following the CPA. The period witnessed the death of 23 persons due to land mine explosions; six persons were injured.

NHRC has also expressed serious concern that both the parties have failed to make public the details of the people killed during decade-long conflict, the status of the property seized and the whereabouts of the persons they arrested, despite their commitment.

“This proves that political parties and their sister organisations are still involved in illegal activities, violating human rights,” an NHRC press release stated.
